What is the Advanced Driving Test?

The Advanced Driving Test is a voluntary driving test for those drivers who wish to find out whether they can meet the IAM standards of a safe, legal and progressive drive.

Any idiot can make fast progress by dangerous, discourteous and illegal driving: the IAM challenge is to maximise your progress while driving safely, legally and courteously at all times.

The test lasts for approximately 90 minutes, and is administered by the holder of a Police Advanced Driving certificate - the most highly qualified road drivers in the world. The test will include every available type of road: residential, urban, country lane, fast A-road, dual carriageway and motorway. It also includes three types of manoeuvre.

Those passing the test are eligible for membership of the Institute as well as full membership of their local group.

How do I prepare for the test?

You can simply apply direct to IAM HQ for your test, but you are unlikely to pass without some kind of preparation.

You can prepare for the test on your own, reading books like the IAM's Pass Your Advanced Driving Test and HMSO's Roadcraft: The police driver's handbook, and practising on your own.

However, it is much easier if you can obtain feedback on your progress and guidance on developing your driving skills by a trained Observer.

For this reason, local groups like North East London & Essex (NELE) offer an Associate Membership scheme.
