What are the benefits of passing?

Perhaps the main motivation for taking the test is the sense of pride and achievement in having demonstrated that you are capable of driving to a far higher standard than that of the basic L-test. There are, however, some more tangible benefits!

The most important of these is that the statistics clearly show that those who have passed the test -- or even trained for it and failed -- are safer drivers.

A Transport Research Laboratory report (LR499) concluded that drivers who had taken the IAM test had an accident rate at least 50% lower than the national average, and those who passed the test were safer still. Even when accidents do occur, those involving advanced drivers are less severe.

More selfishly, a growing number of Insurance companies are offering special terms to IAM members. These terms may include both discounted premiums and additional services.
The main IAM HQ web site lists additional benefits for members.

Are there any other benefits?

As an Associate Member, you are entitled to take part in all the group's activities. Of particular interest to Associates are our monthly meetings -- these include lectures and videos on advanced driving and other interesting topics.

Who can take the Advanced Driving Test?

The advanced driving test is available for drivers of motor cars, motor cycles, Minibuses and commercial vehicles. A caravan-towing test is also available to full IAM members. There is no upper age limit, providing that you hold a current British or ECC driving licence. Many companies pay for their staff to take an advanced driving test. Drivers in the Post Office, Bus and Ambulance Services and the British Army in the UK and overseas, take the test.
